B&S: Justin/Rebecca Engaged, Other Stuff Happens

First of all, funny story to share.  So, I’m in an elevator with my aunt, who is also a big Brothers & Sisters fan.  However, she’s a Celebrity Apprentice fan more and therefore often misses some of B&S every week.  Anyway, in the elevator, I start talking about the episode and that Justin and Rebecca got engaged in the last ten minutes or so…

And the other person in the elevator, a young woman, turns to us and goes: “Really???  I haven’t watched the new episode yet!”

Oops.  Sorry about that!

Yeah, I realize I’ve stated previously that I don’t like Rebecca at all.  And I still don’t.

But…how could you not love that proposal?  When it happened, my reaction was a mixture of “Noooooo!  Rebecca’s never going to go away!” and “Awwww, that’s so sweet!”  I do love Justin, so I was still happy for him that things are finally looking up.  But, unfortunately, that does mean that I will have to warm up to Rebecca. *sigh*

At any rate, we now have the Nora and Holly mothers-of-the-bride-and-groom dynamic.  That is going to be priceless; I literally cannot wait for it.

As for the rest of the episode, here’s a hilarious picture from a Popwatch article that gives a good overview:

Again unfortunately, the picture is like the trailer of any given romantic comedy – highlights the humor so that the situation seems funnier than it actually is.  While I was looking forward to getting a good chuckle out of it, Sarah’s anger at Holly totally ruined the whole thing.  Yes, I get it that that was supposed to be the idea of the scene.  But it came off not as “oh, that’s so funny how Sarah ruins the musical number,” but more as, “oh, crap, what’s going to happen now?”  I found more humor out of the situation from the conversation Holly and Sarah had afterwards with their mikes still on.

So, Justin, Rebecca, Holly, Sarah…alright, I’ll touch on Kitty, Robert, and Nora before I skip to my Ryan rant.  Basically, I agree with what it says in the article – a separation isn’t going to do anything.  While it was good that Kitty ended the almost-affair she was having, she should’ve had a long talk with Robert instead of asking for time apart.  I have a feeling that this separation is only going to make things worse unless one of them ends it soon.  As for Nora, I’m surprised she was the one to go down to Mexico after Tommy.  I thought for sure there was a preview a while back with Tommy talking to Kevin in Mexico, so I guess we’ll have to see.  In the meantime, I’m eager to see Nora track Tommy down, and how she plans to get through to him.

Now we move on to Ryan.  I was cheering when he stormed out of the unity dinner.  As in:  YES!!  Bye-bye, you wimpy Edward Cullen wannabe freak!  Go back to Forks, Washington!  Did you all notice how dark his eyes were this week, what was up with that??

And then he showed up for work the next morning.

Dang, so close.

I especially hated him when he retorts to Justin, “Then why did she kiss me?”  Really?  Dude, just save whatever dignity you imagine you have and give it up, please.

And that’s all for the episode.  I can’t believe next week is the season finale – I’m curious to see what plot lines they leave us hanging with for the summer.

A Message To TV Producers

This is a public service announcement for Tact And General Political Correctness. You will be returned to your regularly scheduled blog after this post.

Over the past month or so, there have been two sources for major news headlines – Somali pirate attacks, and the possibly fatal swine flu pandemic.

Usually, I am not a sensitive person when it comes to general PC. But there have been a few remarks and a plot on TV that I felt could have been avoided with some clever editing. I have only seen three instances so far, but they’re worth mentioning:

Brothers & Sisters:

- While talking about dreams they had, Rebecca and Justin mention pirates. Justin remarks something to the affect of “I like pirates.” He was referring to Pirates of the Caribbean-type pirates, of course, but it came off wrong just the same.

-Tommy is in Mexico. Not a problem when the plot line first premiered, but now people are probably wondering if he’s going to come home (IF he comes home) with the swine flu. Worse yet, they send Nora down there in the most recent episode to look for him.

Wizards of Waverly Place:

-Yes, even Disney Channel is guilty of this.  In “Don’t Rain on Justin’s Parade -Earth,”  main character Alex makes light of the possibility that her brother could get “the flu.”

Now, I know some of you are rolling your eyes at this, and it’s true, I’m probably making a big deal out of nothing.  All I’m saying is that it wouldn’t hurt for producers and editors to show some tact these days.  I haven’t been offended at all, but there’s the chance that a lot of viewers were, and it could hurt ratings.  An incident comes to mind many years ago when Friends pulled and re-filmed a different story line because the original joked about airport security after the 9/11 attacks.

This is more of a warning for mainstream network TV not to get sloppy with PC, especially with how much people are affected by swine flu reports.  I’m not calling for a movement to stop watching any offending show, I’m not upset, I’m not angry.

All I want to do is warn TV producers: BE CAREFUL.

Medium Still Alive and Kicking

This season, the status of Medium has been more unpredictable than the episode plots.  Whether NBC will renew the show is uncertain every season, but this time fans were wondering if Jay Leno’s new show at 10 pm would bump Medium off the schedule.  Well, it looks like Medium will be back.  Click on the picture from the article to go to the Buddytv.com:

It’s nice to see Medium, a show usually under the radar as opposed to craze-inducing shows like Lost or Heroes, getting some love from the press.  There were a rush of articles announcing the renewal, often pairing it with fan favorite Chuck (the fate of which is still undecided).  Maybe the news was more that the original source of the news, the Hollywood Reporter, announced the renewal before NBC did.  But, I’ll be happy with whatever press Medium can get.

Of course, it has only been renewed for a 15-18 episode midyear season.  Now that it’s definitely coming back, can we fans ask NBC to maybe bring it back during the fall next year, or *gasp* maybe even a full season?

A fan can dream.
